Tompkins County Artist
Sarah Lopez is the proud daughter of two immigrants and a gifted fiber artist who specializes in hand-dyed & hand-spun art yarn on canvas (fiber painting.) Lopez is known as The Fiber Painter and is based in Trumansburg, New York.
Lopez began her artistic journey knitting scarves to feel a connection to her grandmothers who used different plant and animal fibers to knit clothing for their families. After moving to the Finger Lakes in 2020, Lopez learned the art of hand-dyeing & hand-spinning wool into yarn. She yearned to showcase the enticing colors and textures of her handmade art yarn so she experimented with cutting and gluing it to canvas. She fell in love with this process and has been adhering fiber to canvas ever since! Each fiber painting contains hundreds of pieces of yarn producing the illusion of brush strokes. Lopez’s work explores themes of nature, identity, empowerment, and healing. Through fiber and touch, Lopez connects with the ancestral practices of repair, holding space for pain, while imagining something better for the future.
